And that's a wrap on our first Accepted Students Day!

Congratulations to all of the accepted students to Adelphi University! Welcome Class of 2019!

Today was our first Accepted Students Day, and we hope our previous post helped you prep yourself for today. We'd like to thank all students and family who were a part of our big day today. For those who drove quite a bit to be here today, we hope you had a pleasant day viewing our beautiful campus at Adelphi.

As Admissions Ambassadors at Adelphi, we strive for nothing less than the best for our prospective students, soooo, the snow (in spring -.-) never bothered us anyway!

We had a great and energetic number of campus tours both before and after our welcome ceremony where our talented vocal music ensemble performed for the students to give you all a very tiny taste of what Adelphi has to offer. Around the track, we had representatives and executive board members from all clubs and societies at Adelphi to add to the atmosphere of what life at Adelphi is like!

I was drawn back to my Matriculation Ceremony and I hope every single student who dropped in today left with the idea of wanting to come back, permanently of course!

Here are some shots from today!

Here are two of the Admissions Ambassadors with our very own AU Panther. If you took any pictures with our panther today, don't forget to tag us on your social media profiles! @adelphiambassadors on Instagram, and use the hashtags #ExploreAdelphi and #AdelphiAccepted on both Instagram and Twitter.

If you missed today's Accepted Students' Day, that is totally fine! We have one more coming up on the 19th of April. Don't forget to register online and come get a feel of what life at Adelphi is like! Once again, thank you all for coming today. If you still have any further questions or want to schedule an individual tour, feel free to call our office or e-mail us at: admissionsambassadors@adelphi.edu
Hope we answered all your questions and hoping to see you all very soon!
Welcome, Class of 2019.

School, sleep, or fun? How about all three!

All of the college acceptance letters are coming in the mail and your excitement is growing. You are starting to look online at all that these schools offer; residence halls, clubs, organizations, Greek life, sports team, and of course the academic classes. There is so much you want to do, how do you do it all? You may not think it is all possible without giving up sleep but it is. I'm proof.

I am honest when I say I carry a full load in life. I am a dance major who takes their dance classes every day, has a full load of academic classes, three jobs on campus, involved in multiple clubs, and I am part of Greek Life and have an Executive Board position in that organization. You are probably wondering how I handle all of this and still get at least eight hours of sleep a night, time management and planning. This is the key to a successful academic and social life in college. I manage my time using a planner, here at Adelphi you can get a free planner at our Panthertainment booth. I give each activity a colored pen and make my planner color coded. For example, class is purple, clubs are blue, work is green, etc. Then I copy this colorful planner onto my colorful calendar above my desk in my residence hall so I can always view my schedule no matter what I am doing.

In college, you can get all caught up in everything you are doing that you forget about yourself. Another important thing to plan for is what I call "me time". I make sure I have "me time" once a day and it is something I want to do, not something that was assigned or needs to be done. "Me time" is essential to keeping your stress level down and is fun. "Me time" could range from watching a movie or TV show, going to the mall or out to eat, or my personal favorite, taking a nap.

College is what you make of it but don't spread your self too thin. Maybe you don't need to join six clubs at one time. Maybe you join two or three so you have time to do schoolwork and then next semester change them up or add them in slowly. Your academic schedule changes each semester so your activities should as well. College is meant to be fun and inspiring, manage your time well and there is no doubt in my mind that college will be an amazing experience, hey, I'm doing it!

Accepted Students Day

As some may know, we're approaching our first Accepted Students Day of the year, for the class of 2019! Accepted Students Day is on Saturday, March 28th, and we also have another one on Saturday, April 19th. If you haven't signed up for one of these days and are available to come, I definitely suggest registering for one, whether you've visited the campus already or not. Accepted Students Day is a wonderful opportunity to see the campus through your new eyes as an accepted student.

When I was a prospective student, Accepted Students Day is what finalized my decision to attend Adelphi. There is a certain feeling you get when you step onto a college campus and you feel as if that's where you'll belong for the next four years (I tried to make that sound a little less cliche and cheesy, but it didn't really work out). At this event I learned about the campus, academics for my major, and I got to meet some really nice people who were also accepted. Since all the students who attend this day are accepted, it's a great way to meet new friends and help each other through the process of choosing a school.

Not only will you be able to go out on a tour with an admissions ambassador here at Adelphi, but you'll also get the chance to walk around the club fair, meet with different departments, and even talk with a financial aid representative (cause who doesn't love financial aid!). The club fair is a great opportunity to find people who are interested in similar things as you are, and even express interest in these clubs to current members who are at the booth. Because believe me, if you decide to attend Adelphi in the fall, the club members will be ecstatic to see you again!

Since these events are held in the spring, you'll be able to see our picturesque campus with all the beauty it holds. The flowers are blooming and the sun is shining, so head over here to Adelphi and embrace your acceptance to the University!

Out-of-state: Finding Your Home Away From Home

I’m a small-town girl from the mountains in Southern California, and I chose to travel 3,000 mi away to go to Adelphi University. All my life, I knew I wanted to spread my wings and go someplace new when I went to college. The reason for that is that I wanted to have the experience of being by myself for once and figuring it out on my own (of course, my mom would only be a phone call away). Whenever I think about what my life would be like if I did stay close to home, I realize how blessed I am that I was able to have this WONDERFUL opportunity to grow into the person I am today.

Finding the right school:

When I was searching for schools, I looked for schools that were in an area I would be comfortable living in and that had the specific programs I was looking to get into. Hint: If you haven’t been to the area the school is located in, Google pictures and articles about the town/city. (Garden City is beautiful!)

Accepted?:

CONGRATULATIONS!!! Now you can take a tour of the campus to figure out if you can see yourself at that school: walking to classes and living in the residence halls. I had my aunt, who lives close by, take pictures of the campus and get a general feel for it, since I couldn’t afford to come see it. If you can’t go see a campus you’re interested in, don’t worry. You can usually get a feel for it by pictures online and reviews by other students. Here’s Adelphi’s official website: http://www.adelphi.edu/

Orientation:

This is the time you’re going to have to meet all new people who could potentially be your best friends for the next 4 years. I still get together with my orientation group and Orientation Leaders (OLs) every so often. I’m also still really close to the first friend I ever made at Adelphi University.

Freshman Year:

Freshman year was so new and amazing for me. I met the most genuine people, and I expanded my horizons in different ways: by joining clubs, trying out for a sports team, finding a job on campus (such as being an Admissions Ambassador), and getting involved in Greek Life. My advice for freshman year as an out-of-state student is to GET INVOLVED… The more you have to do, the more connected you’ll feel to your school.

A weekend of FAME at the AUPAC!

FAME! One of the most renown musicals. Well, that is precisely what the AUPAC experienced this past weekend. The AUPAC is also known for the fantastic seasons that are organized each year. If you want to see and meet famous people, the Adelphi University Performing Arts Centre is one place you want to keep on your watch! This past weekend, we had the privilege of meeting and watching two very famous personalities.

The weekend started with Paul Iacono. Paul plays the lead role in MTV's "The Hard Times of RJ Berger." He also plays one of the lead roles in the revival film edition of the musical FAME. Adding to all this excitement, Paul also played one of the leads in the movie GBF. You think that's all he did? Haha good try! Paul's career started when he was only a wee-kid! He was on stage, performing alongside leading broadway stars. He made his Broadway debut even before any of us thought of singing. At the age of 11, Paul was on Broadway performing famous musicals like "Mame". Paul performed his latest one man musical: "Where's the effing kid". His first public performance will be on the 11th of March at 54 Below, where, Paul sings and talks about his childhood, what fame was like to him, and his struggles of fighting against leukemia and being the star that he is right now! Paul Iacono has such an amazing and vibrant personality, and if I could make suggestions right now, one of them would be to please do yourselves a favor and go watch him at 54 Below!

Paul Iacono: "Who's the effing kid"

Following Paul, that same weekend, the Tony Award winning Broadway nightingale Laura Benanti performed a variety of numbers on the 8th of March! Firstly, I must commend her on her sense of humor, because wow, I thought I was funny, until I watched her! Adding to her vibrant personality is her beautiful voice! Laura Benanti started off with a broadway classic from The Sound of Music and moved onto a variety of genres. She performed an arrangement of a song by Ellie Goulding and Lana Del Ray. She then moved onto performing a few jazz numbers, and rotated back to songs from musicals. And she plays the ukelele! With every song she sang, Laura Benanti's voice was different, and in my eyes, that is a true vocalist; One who can take the form of a genre through his/her voice and she in fact is the best and perfect example for this. My next advice for you is, please purchase a ticket for the Spring Spectacular at the Radio City Music Hall because she will be performing there too. You could probably already tell through my level of excitement that I already did. Well, yes, maybe.

Laura Benanti

My last piece of advice: KEEP YOURSELF UPDATED WITH EVENTS AND SHOWS AT THE AUPAC. You definitely do not want to miss out on these amazing opportunities. All the more reason you should apply to Adelphi! You can make use of amazing savings on student discount tickets! I watched Laura Benanti for $20 and Paul Iacono for $5! Now, tell me why you wouldn't apply?

Descending to the Underground

Here at Adelphi, almost every single person has a place on campus where they go when they are feeling stressed, have some extra time on their hands, or simply just want to hang out and meet up with friends. Some people like the Performing Arts Center (PAC), the library, or even the Center for Recreation and Sports (CRS). Personally, as you may have guessed by the title, mine is the Underground Cafe in the University Center. Whether it may be that I have a break between classes, or maybe I have some extra time and need to get some work done, I'll always be heading to the Underground. Not to mention there's Starbucks Coffee and Juniors Cheesecake served down there!

The Underground Cafe is always full of people chatting, reading, doing homework, and enjoying a nice cup of coffee. One of my favorite things is when there are performers in the underground; a couple of times a month, the underground cafe has students come sing and/or play an instrument, making the room feel like a chic jazz cafe. One of my favorite things to do when there's a performance, is go to the University Center Cafeteria with my friends to get dinner, and bring it downstairs and eat while listening to the performer in the Underground.

The way my schedule is set up, I have an hour break between my classes. Personally, I know if I go back to my room I'd want to lay down and not wake up for my next class, which wouldn't be so good. So instead, I head to the underground to do work, get a cup of coffee, and/or just go on my computer (aka go on Pinterest). And what's so amazing is there are so many different places to sit; if I'm doing work, I'll usually sit at a table or booth so I'm able to concentrate, but otherwise, I usually sit on one of the couches or extremely comfortable chairs they have. I could stay down there for hours, just doing work or on my computer (and sometimes I have).

So, I invite you to fall in love with the Underground Cafe too!

Best of Broadway "Tales of New York"

Come one come all to Adelphi University's Concert Hall! Adelphi's Music Department presents "Best of Broadway". This production is a mixer of music and theater majors and this year was a collaboration of songs from musicals all about New York. From Rent, 42nd Street, West Side Story and so many more these performers sang their heart and soul out and you can tell. I attend this performance every semester and each semester it gets better and better. The Performing Art Center students, or the PAC kids, are a family, we all share a passion for the fine arts. So it is no surprise when I say the audience was full. We all support each other. Theater majors go to dance and music performances and music and dance majors do the same for the theater majors. We all understand our livelihood depends on people seeing our shows.

I got my ticket "Student Rush" so it was free!

I said the audience was full but it wasn't all PAC kids. The arts are fully supported on Adelphi's campus. Many alumni, athletes, Greek life, and student's from all majors were there to support. The art's bring people together. Adelphi is a liberal arts college, meaning you, as a student, are required to take courses in an art. That doesn't mean drawing or painting it can mean any art; music, dance, drama, etc. Seeing these performances help you get a feel for which art best suits you. Also, attending musical performances gives you a great college moment to share with your friends back home or when telling people about your college experience in the future. College is what you make of it. How many people can say they have seen their friend and peer sing "Take me or Leave Me" from Rent. Well, now I can.

AUPAC Theatre Department presents short plays by O'Neill and Williams.

The Theatre Department at Adelphi has a seasonal agenda of performances that you can find out more about on the AUPAC website or in one of the brochures you pick up when you visit the PAC (Performing Arts Centre). Why we call it a seasonal agenda is because our department is one that believes in experiential learning, especially since it's a B.F.A program. Faculty, staff and students in both the Acting and Tech departments work on all of the productions done by the Theatre Department as a collaborative effort. Students in the department audition every semester for the productions, through which they are able to expand their experiences in the field. Not to mention, the impressive additions to the résumés

To kick off this season of theatrical performances, directors: Maggie Lally and Marlee Koenigsberg showcased "An Evening of Short Plays by Eugene O'Neill and Tennessee Williams". The production ran from the 24th of February 2015 till the 1st of March 2015. For those of you aware of these playwrights, the program consisted of the following 4 plays:

  1. This Property Is Condemned (Tennessee Williams)
  2. The Web (Eugene O'Neill)
  3. Before Breakfast (Eugene O'Neill)
  4. Monny's Kid Don't Cry (Tennessee Williams)

It was an evening full of intense drama and emotion. Every single actor from the productions went their extra mile with research, in order to play their roles successfully and to do justice to themselves and the playwrights.

Also, on a side note, before any production starts the house management tells you to switch your phone off or to put it on silent. Let's be real here, silent works for us! They also tell you that photography/videography is strictly prohibited, but I guess I cheated.

This picture that I secretly managed to take, is from "Before Breakfast". Also, hi5 and props to our very own ambassador Scott Pero for a fantastic job in The Web. (sorry I tried sneaking a picture, but I clearly failed.) Swing by or call our Office of Admissions to schedule a tour and meet Scott or any of our theatre majors. Don't forget to check out the AUPAC website for this season's performances and guest artist shows at the PAC!!!

The Experience of a Lifetime for AU Dance Majors

Start your college dance training on the right foot! Adelphi's dance department offers ballet and modern classes to all Adelphi students whether you are a dance major or not. Train with experienced faculty from the Paul Taylor Dance Company, The Jennifer Mueller Company, the Bolshoi Ballet, the Kirov Ballet and many other companies.

Special for our dance majors, like me, Taylor 2, a company under Paul Taylor, had a three week residency at Adelphi. This company of six dancers, from around the world, came and taught classes, rehearsed and performed two shows all at Adelphi! Every week, they taught every dancer twice. They each have a different take on the Paul Taylor style so each class was a different experience. Some were more physical, some more elegant. In the afternoon, they held open rehearsals. Anyone on campus could come into their rehearsals and watch them dance. See the blood, sweat and tears that makes dance so beautiful. They performed two shows in our Dance Theater located in the Performing Arts Center, February 13th and 20th. Each show consisted of three works and each show was completely different. If you went to both shows you saw 6 different works! Now I know you are wondering, two shows must be expensive. Well, Adelphi has what is called Student Rush. An hour before the show, if there are still seats available, Adelphi students can get a free ticket! The arts on a budget!

Taylor 2 cast pictured performing Dust.

The final week of the Taylor 2 residency was my personal favorite. It was run like a Paul Taylor Intensive. Second class, every day, two members from Taylor 2 taught us original repertoire. I got to perform Dust, a piece about times of trouble and death. Dust is an 8 minute very fast  piece full of many jumps. It was tiring and exhausting but a lot of fun and extremely rewarding when I finally got it right. Friday, each level got to show their repertoire, kind of like our own little performance so everyone could see how hard we have been working that week. Other levels got to perform moments from the Rite of Spring, the Cloven Waltz, and Sunset. After the performances, there was a Q&A with Taylor 2. We got to ask them any question we wanted from what is your favorite moment from this company to the cost of your rent from your first apartment in the city, all questions important to dancers looking to be professionals. Adelphi is training us to be able to dance but these experiences give us the chance to see how we make dance a career.
