  • Why did you transfer to Adelphi?
    • I chose to come to Adelphi because I felt that I could be myself at this university. I can get involved, which benefits my personal growth, and I've been given so many wonderful opportunities towards my career as an aspiring Journalist. I always say, "home is where the heart is," and Adelphi has become my home and transferring here has been the greatest decision I've made so far in my college career.

WELCOME BACK! GET INVOLVED!

Hey there new, returning, or prospective Adelphi students! Welcome Back! I hope everyone enjoyed their summer! As hard as it is to leave the beach and switch beach bags filled with towels and sunscreen for backpacks with books and folders, it makes it a little easier knowing we're coming back to our beautiful campus! Speaking of coming back, how happy is everyone to finally be all settled in? If you're like me, you waited until the last possible minute to pack everything up, and the day before move-in you were completely stressed. But moving everything in quickly became worth it after driving onto campus and being reunited with friends!

A new year means new opportunities to join some of the amazing clubs and organizations on campus.  If you were to talk to anyone who's already graduated college, if they have any regrets whatsoever, it most likely be if they weren't involved. Being involved on campus opens up so many opportunities, both professionally and in terms of meeting new people. Did you know that here at Adelphi we have over 80 clubs and organizations?! Whaaat?! So even if you feel as if there's nothing here for you, believe me, you just need to look a little harder!

Some of those over 80 clubs and organizations include: Robotics Club, Habitat for Humanity, Student Activities Board, Class Government Club, Biology Club, and Greek Life! Pretty much any club you ever wanted, we have here at Adelphi! Along with these, we also offer club sports and intramural sports. So if you enjoy baseball, badminton, equestrian, and other sports, but don't feel like committing to joining the team, then join the club team! And just remember, if there is something you're extremely passionate about, but we don't have a club for it, just head over to Center for Student Involvement (CSI) and make your own club!!
*PS- Still not sure what clubs/organizations to join? Come to the CSI Activities Fair on Tuesday September 8th between 11:30am and 2pm*

So after you get yourself involved in campus, take some time for yourself! Get a coffee in the nicely air conditioned Underground, or catch some sun on the quad!

HAPPY SEPTEMBER 🌞

  • What is your favorite spot on campus?
    • My favorite spot on campus is definitely the library. It is so great to go there between classes and relax. There are so many things I can do in there. Whether I'm in the Information commons hanging out with friends, or in the stacks reading a good book, I'm always having a good time!
  • What is your favorite spot in the local area?
    • My favorite spot in the local area is The Witches Brew. It's a vegetarian coffeehouse that is Halloween themed all year round. It is such an awesome place to hang out with friends.
  • What are your favorite social and academic experiences that you have had at Adelphi?
    • Social: I love being a part of the Commuter Student Organization. One of the best experiences I've had is Commuter Appreciation Week. Every semester we hold a week of events. last Fall I had the opportunity to see Aladdin on Broadway when it first came out for just $30 and I got to bring a guest!
    • Academic: My favorite academic experience was taking Level IV Spanish with Professor Sandra Riveros. She, like so many professors, made me feel so comfortable here at Adelphi. The first day of classes she got to know each person in our class and why we were taking Spanish. When I told her that I wanted to be a bilingual teacher and get my ESL Certification she really listened. The next week she came back with a job offer to teach English as a second language in the local community. She was so caring from day one and she always made learning fun. She really inspired me to be a Spanish minor.
  • Why did you choose Adelphi?
    • I chose Adelphi for its STEP program. Its small class sizes and all of the opportunities and resources that it offers to its students.
  • What is a fun fact about yourself?
    • When I was younger, I was a competitive swimmer. Soon after I started, I realized that I don't have a competitive bone in my body when I let people pass me because I felt bad for them.

Ayubown - Adventures with Isuri #6

And we're back!

I'm so sorry it's been forever! Have you been following up? Have you been missing my adventures? Of course you have, and because of that you'd realize that I've quite deliberately skipped 2 precious adventures! I promise I will post them for you to go cry in a corner!

I just got back to the ever so busy, yet jaw-dropping, New York a few days ago. Jet-lag's the usual annoying self keeping me up from about 4am. However, my fellow friend jet-lag inspired me to make use of my precious time awake, and so I complied this 2 and 1/2 minute video of some seriously super high footage. I obviously meant my aeroplane ride from Colombo to New York. (P.s: does anyone even say aeroplane anymore?)

So here's the beautiful little video of slo-mos, time lapses etc. I swear this video puts me to ease every single time! It's such a peaceful little clip. Make sure you watch it in HD. Don't be stingy over your WiFi!

Until I put together my missing adventures, see you soon!

Thank You!

Did you know that Adelphi University was featured on The Huffington Post's "20 Most Polite Colleges" list according to GrubHub? Check out the article here! Thank you!

Now to look forward to lunch at the Garden City Bistro, which is only a short 2 minute drive away! I'm thinking about a Grilled Chicken Panini.

Ayubowan - Around Sri Lanka with Isuri #3

And we're back after some traveling and catching up of the island. I'll take off where I stopped, and what today's blog post is about is:
"The importance and significance of Tea in Sri Lanka"
A little history lesson before I go on to tell you what I learnt, is that, Sri Lanka was under the British, Dutch and Portugal Colony back when we were referred to as Ceylon. Our import roots start from way back then. Our biggest import trades were tea and spices: cinnamon etc. Tea has and is one of the biggest prides to any Sri Lankan. We'd have ginger tea, or a milk tea or a good plain tea either at home in the evenings, at offices for tea, or from one of the little shops along side the roads.

One of the biggest world renown tea brands come from Sri Lanka, and that is Dilmah. Dilmah is found in almost any country you go to. "Dilmah is not just another brand of tea." Ranging from normal black tea flavors to anything you imagine, Dilmah along with many other fantastic brands of tea will produce and import. Come to me and tell me that you like your Lipton tea and can't live without it, and I'll give you a pack of some solid Lankan tea for your taste buds to compare. Us Sri Lankans take the production of tea very seriously and personally; Where every single cup of tea you'll drink is made of love and culture, from the origin of the leaves, to the beverage you drink.

However, the point I'm trying to make here is the fact that we take our cup of tea for granted. Most if not all of the tea estates are located in the central part of Sri Lanka where there are the hills and the climate is nice and cold. (Yeah, it's actually cold. Surprising huh? Despite the 24/7*365 heat.) Most Sri Lankans visit the hills during the April season as tradition with their families. Myself and my family included, we've travelled past these tea estates a numerous amount of times, but we take for granted how the tea leaves we consume, get to the supermarkets that we purchase them from.

This summer, I visited a tea plantation along with my best friend Mayumi and her sister Miyuko, and we were shown how one plucks tea leaves, and we were able to experience a very tiny glimpse of what it's like to be a tea plucker. The less sophisticated part about your china cup of tea, is the fact that the women who pluck the leaves, drop their kids off to a less equipped and low maintenance day care at 7.30am and get to work in the estates by 8am. The women who run the daycare are of the same community too and try their very best to provide for the children, a fraction of an education. There are approximately 20-35 families living in one estate, where each one of these families work for and dedicate their lives to the companies/people who own the estate. That's poverty for you. That's what makes your cup of tea.

Before I proceed to introduce you to the reality of the job, let me tell you the challenges we faced.

  • We couldn't stay out in the sun on the job for more than 15-20 minutes.
  • The tea bags are worn around your heads and are insanely heavy to keep up with.
  • It was hard to wear a saree and move through the trees.
  • It was insanely difficult to figure out which tea leaves qualified for plucking. (No not everything you see is good to be plucked. That's a whole other story.) It was hard to have made at least a handful of a collection, let alone 20kg.

These women, then work tirelessly under the sun till about 1.00pm, after which they take a lunch break and get back to work till 4.30pm. However these times may change, as each tea plucker is assigned an area of land and are required to make a daily collection of a minimum of 20kg of tea leaves, for which they get paid 600/= a day. ($4.50 daily wage, in comparison to your minimum $8.75 hourly wage for us New Yorkers.)

Companies like Dilmah help to take forward the name of our country into the lifestyles of those all around the world. With something as small as tea, yet such a large industry in Sri Lanka, you can get to know what our culture is like.
I'd love to write another blog post making some good jokes and talking about the nice cultural and tropical views of the island, but I think it's time you and I both appreciate what we take for granted. I'm not ashamed to say that we have poverty amongst us, but I'm voicing it out so that something can be done to at least provide for the children a proper education. Yes, I'm privileged, and I'm thankful for it. So are you. You're reading this now because of your privilege. Next time you sip on your cup of tea, think about it. Think about all the hard work that goes into that little cup.

Meet Sarah Gallo, a Sophomore Communication Sciences and Disorders major in the STEP program from Melville, NY.

  • What is your favorite spot on campus?
    • My favorite spot on campus is my residence hall because it is a great place to make new friends in your building and hang out (and make mac and cheese).
  • What is your favorite spot in the local area?
    • My favorite spot in the local area is the Lantern Diner -- it's a short walk from campus and is open 24/7. So, no matter what time it is I can always get sweet potato fries.
  • What are your favorite social and academic experiences that you have had at Adelphi?
    • Social: Joining Greek life -- finding a group of girls that I can call my sisters and who will always be there for me was absolutely life changing.
    • Academic: I was given the opportunity to have a Q&A with David Finkel, author of Thank You For Your Service. I love meeting authors and getting to hear about what inspired their writing.
  • Why did you choose Adelphi?
    • I chose to attend Adelphi because of their five year STEP program for teaching. I get to obtain my Bachelors and Masters in only five years rather than six! In addition, I get to experience the best of both worlds because Adelphi's distance from my house is enough that I get to live here, but also get to easily visit home!
  • What is a fun fact about yourself?
    • I'm actually allergic to dogs and cats :(

  • What is your favorite spot on campus?
    • My favorite spot is definitely under the cherry blossom trees because it's always gorgeous.
  • What is your favorite spot in the local area?
    • I like going to Roosevelt Field Mall to get all of my shopping (and people watching) done.
  • What are your favorite social and academic experiences that you have had at Adelphi?
    • Social: Being in the Honors College, I've had so many opportunities to attend shows on Broadway, at the Guggenheim, and the Met. I've seen three professional dance shows including American Ballet Theatre and Paul Taylor Dance Company, which is great for me, being a dancer since age 3.
    • Academic: I thoroughly enjoyed a seminar with Professor Peter Costello called Attachment and Relationships, where we dove into the psychology of a person from birth through adulthood and the factors that affect their personality and romantic attachments.
  • Why did you choose Adelphi?
    • I chose to attend Adelphi because I'm from one of the tiniest towns imaginable, where everyone knows everyone, and everything is personalized. It's the same exact thing here. I feel like this is my home now, and my hometown is my second home. Being ten minutes from the mall, fifteen minutes from a beach, and thirty minutes from the city, it's great.
  • What is a fun fact about yourself?
    • I recently won Miss New York 2015! (Yes, even though I'm from PA...)

Ayubowan - Around Sri Lanka with Isuri (#2)

Welcome back to the Adventures of Isuri. Like I said in my previous post, this post will be about one of many encountered adventures during my weekend in Nuwara Eliya.

The following morning, we decided we wanted to do more than just eat, enjoy the blissful weather, sleep, watch some interesting movies and repeat.  Sooo, we thought we'd do a hike through the mountains! I mean, it couldn't be that bad right? A 2.5 hour hike. I do it every day, you know, casually, just hike.

At the start of our hike, our pal from the hotel; Muttu, walked us past a day care that rather intrigued me. This daycare houses the kids of the women who are employed by tea estates around the area as tea pluckers. These women drop off their children at 8am and pick them up right after work.

(Left: Muttu teaching us about different tea leaves.)
(Right: Kids at the daycare.)

Proceeding on our hike through the hills, we bumped into a group of kids from the area who were extremely excited to see us and talk to us. The younger kids on the selfie very excited said "Hello friend" to me, while the older kids from the group picture proceeded to talk to me in as much English as they knew. This was truly a heart warming moment and such a delightful experience to see how excited these kids got, to just be able to talk to someone in English and help fix the sentences they knew.

(Kids from the neighborhood who rushed to talk to us.)

So we kept walking up hill, and it wasn't too bad to be honest. Was a beautiful day, and the view was just so spectacular my Snapstory demanded that it should be at least 400seconds long, and so I abided by my social media demands. It was just another amazing day to be back at home, climbing and hiking, cos I've lived 19 years in Sri Lanka and it took me 1 year away to realize I needed to explore a lot more. So yes, let me throw the beauty of nature in your face.

Explain to me exactly how nature could be so breathtaking. Wow. (---->)

And then we just kept walking, and walking, and it was a little exhausting, although we were no where close to giving up, but we kept going. UNTIL, Muttu showed us this cute little tree house up a massive slop-y hill and said, "That, is where we are going."

It was fine at first, but we really needed about 5 minutes to let it sink in. Now let me tell you this, I am not a gym rat, and I do not plan on being one either, but I was determined, although I had my mom screaming at me like one of those voices in my head, because she wasn't really ready for this climb through the jungle. Muttu asked us to be extremely quiet from this point forth, until we reach the top, because there's plenty of animals in this jungly area and he obviously didn't want us eaten alive. I mean, yeah sure, I'll be quiet, though I was really screaming inside me. Well I must say the same for my bestfriend and her sister too!

So here's us struggling at the start, and somewhere mid point, through the branches that went in your face, and the thorns that gently caressed you (not really) and the dried up leaves that creeped out your soul like there's no end to tomorrow.

Good times, good times. I must say I rather enjoyed doing this, despite the many complaints, IT WAS SO MUCH FUN!

Well, what can I say. We got to the top, and this was what we saw.
*cue the dramatic music ; preferably Chariots of Fire*

Well folks, that bring us to the end of today's adventures. No seriously, come back for my next post, because I plucked tea! That's a sight you don't want to miss. Ready your bank account and plan your vacation.

Ayubowan - Around Sri Lanka with Isuri (#1)

Hello prospective Panthers and current Panthers! Hope you are all having a fantastic Summer break!

This is first of a few posts that I'll be making, introducing you all to where I come from:
SRI LANKA :)

There's a few guest appearances on this post. So let me introduce to you my bestfriend and her sister, Mayumi and Miyuko, and of course my support system, my parents.

So this past weekend I went to Nuwara Eliya after quite some time, and I had such a fantastic time being back! For those of you who've heard me rant, the weather forecast in Sri Lanka is basically summer all year long, but N.E is where it's nicer and colder because it's up in the Central Province of the island; the hills.

Fun fact: In 1995, Sri Lanka was the World's No. 1 tea exporter. We're currently the fourth, but where do you think all this tea (that you possibly drank too) comes from? Nuwara Eliya!

We made a small pitt stop at Dambulla before getting to N.E and I managed to snap this on the way.

En route: Dambulla

The following day we made it to Nuwara Eliya, where we stayed at the Heritance Tea Factory. The tea factory was burnt down during the First World War, and so in the 30s was renovated into the hotel today. Later in the 60s additional interior design adjustments were made to create the master piece it is today. However, everything in the hotel, was a productive part of the tea factory it once was.

A panoramic view of the hotel.

Meet Chaminda; a hotel employee who welcomed us into this beautiful stay with some tradition.

Chaminda after greeting us.

Hah! Are you so caught up in this bucket list destination? Catch my next post to read and see what I did during my weekend in Nuwara Eliya. Yes, believe me, I did more than indulge myself in some strawberries and cream and elegantly sip on my cup of tea! Await post #2.

Our Summer Ambassador Family: Megan Mazza

Introducing our summer ambassador staff! These amazing students stick around for the summer and have the opportunity to represent Adelphi University as ambassadors who will help you find your home here at Adelphi.

Meet Megan Mazza, a Senior English major in the STEP program from Valley Stream, NY.

  • What is your favorite spot on campus?
    • My favorite spot on campus is the stacks in Swirbul Library because it's always quiet and my go-to place to get work done.
  • What is your favorite spot in the local area?
    • I love going to Buffalo Wild Wings, especially on Tuesdays or Thursdays when it's 69 cent wing night. Plus it's a great place to watch a hockey game!
  • What are your favorite social and academic experiences that you have had at Adelphi?
    • Social: I really enjoy going to the various Broadway shows that S.A.B. provides tickets for. I've been able to see Finding Neverland, Lion King, Newsies, Jersey Boys, Phontom of the Opera, and so many more, and all for a cheap price!
    • Academic: One of my favorite academic experiences is going to the Soap Box series that is hosted by professors in the English Department. This series targets different aspects of writing and literature within the world. One of my favorites that I attended was about censorship and there was a panel of writers from Singapore that shared their experiences with censorship. Not only was it an eye opening experience, but a great networking opportunity as well.
  • Why did you choose Adelphi?
    • I came to Adelphi initially because of the small class sizes. My high school graduating class was small so I was used to having only about twenty students or so in my class, plus I was a teachers pet and wanted to be able to maintain that same kind of relationship with my professors. I didn't want to just be a number in the classroom.
  • What is a fun fact about yourself?
    • My car's name is Maurice and he has a mustache.

  • What is your favorite spot in the local area?
    • I love going to 7th Street! There are so many shops and restaurants that I like to visit.
  • What are your favorite social and academic experiences that you have had at Adelphi?
    • Social: I enjoyed going to Six Flags' Fight Fest with our Student Activities Board for free. I got to go on El Toro for the first time, and got over my fear of roller coasters!
    • Academic: I have to say I love doing my clinical rotations - they are very rewarding. Every time I go to my rotation, I have the opportunity to put a smile on someone's face, or someone can put a smile on mine.
  • Why did you choose Adelphi?
    • I chose Adelphi because of the location -- I was able to commute from home, while also having so many opportunities to get involved!
  • What is a fun fact about yourself?
    • I'm a first generation college student and I can speak Portuguese fluently!

Much Love for our Student Workers

As you may have already figured out, there's A LOT to do on our beautiful campus, and in the surrounding area. There may be only one problem... some of the attractions in the surrounding area cost a little bit of money. So, I have a proposition for all you soon-to-be Adelphi students, or even prospective students - get a job on campus! I work in the admissions office as an admissions ambassador, where my duties are to give tours and help around with office work. Also, many of the admissions ambassadors in the office also answer phones and deal with questions. So, if you happen to call the admissions office and someone answers saying, "Hello this is student worker (insert name here) speaking..." that's us!

Along with working in the admissions office, there are also many other jobs around campus. One very popular one among students is working in the Alice Brown Early Learning Center. This is a preschool we have right on campus, and happens to be a great way to gain experience with children, if you happen to be going into a field where you would work with them. In our University Center, we have the Center for Student Involvement, which is a very popular place for students to look for jobs. Here, students do office work and help clubs and organizations with miscellaneous work they may have around the office. You can also work in our Panthertainment Booth, selling discounted movie tickets, discounted Broadway show tickets, and even lending out umbrellas or portable chargers. Another job we have on campus is working in the Center for Recreation and Sports (CRS). For this job, students swipe ID cards for gym access, greet any and all patrons who enter the CRS, tidy up the equipment room, and much more. Students are also able to be "Group Fitness Helpers," in which they help sign in all the students who come to their designated group fitness class, as well as help the instructor with anything they need. Also, if you're a certified lifeguard, we have a job for you at our 4-lane pool in the CRS! The possibilities are never ending!

These jobs described above are not even half of the available positions we have on campus. Often times, students are actually able to get a job in the departments in which they're interested in. Many times professors will look for student workers to help in out with filling or various other jobs around the office. So, definitely get to know your professors and express interest early on, so he/she will keep you in mind if/when the department is looking for a student worker.

I can already tell that becoming an admissions ambassador will be one of the best decisions I've made at Adelphi. This job has introduced me to so many amazing people I probably otherwise wouldn't have known, and has helped me integrate myself into the Adelphi community. Every counselor and student worker in the office is so extremely nice, which makes me genuinely enjoy going into work. I strongly suggest finding a job you love wherever you end up going to college, because believe me, you won't regret it!
